Biography

The Hon. Margaret A. Pui Yee Chan is an Acting Justice of the New York County Supreme Court, Civil Term in New York. She was designated to the Supreme Court bench in 2013 by the Hon. A. Gail Prudenti, former Chief Administrative Judge of the State of New York. At the time of her designation to the Supreme Court, Justice Chan had served as a judge of the Civil Court of the City of New York in New York County since being elected to the seat in 2007.

She received her B.A. from Brooklyn College in 1979. Chan then went on to earn her J.D. from Touro Law Center in 1993.

After graduating from law school, she served as a senior court attorney for the New York Supreme Court Appellate Division, Second Department from 1993 to 1999.

Chan then entered into private practice. She first worked as an associate at Gim and Wong, P.C. and would later be named a partner at the firm, which would then become Gim and Chan, P.C. In 2001, Chan left to practice briefly as a partner at the Law Offices of Chan, Lee, and Cheung, PLLC. The following year, Chan entered into solo practice at her own law firm. She would remain in the private sector until her election to the Civil Court in 2007.

Justice Chan has also taught legal writing for LLMs as an adjunct professor at Fordham University School of Law beginning in 2017.
