Judge Richard Mott - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Richard Mott is a Justice of the Columbia County Supreme Court in the Third Judicial District of New York. He was elected to the Supreme Court bench in 2013.

He is a registered Democrat.

Mott received his B.A. from the State University of New York at New Paltz in 1971. He went on to earn an M.A. from the College of St. Rose (1975) and a J.D. from Vermont Law School (1981).

After graduating from university, he served in the 156th Field Artillery with the U.S. Army National Guard from 1971 to 1977. He also worked as a special education teacher for individuals with learning disabilities from 1974 to 1978.

Mott began his legal career in both the public and private sectors in 1982. It was at that time that he worked as a sole practitioner at his own law practice as well as an assistant public defender with the Columbia County Public Defender’s Office. Then, the following year, he also began serving as a criminal justice panel attorney with the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York.

Mott would maintain his solo practice as well as his position with the District Court until his election to the bench. He held his position with the Public Defender’s Office until 1989.

In 1984, he served a two-year stint as a town attorney for the Town of Kinderhook in Columbia County.

His memberships have included the Columbia County Bar Association, the Greene County Bar Association, the Federal Bar Association, and the New York State Defenders Association.
