Judge Lizette Colon - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Lizette Colon is an Acting Justice of the Kings County Supreme Court, Civil Term in the Second Judicial District of New York. She was designated to the Supreme Court bench in 2019 by the Hon. Lawrence K. Marks, Chief Administrative Judge of the State of New York. Prior to her designation, Justice Colon had served as a Kings County Civil Court judge since being elected to the seat in 2015.

She is a registered Democrat.

Justice Colon received her J.D. from Brooklyn Law School in 1998.

Outside of the bench, she spent the bulk of her legal career employed with the New York State Unified Court System, where she held various positions including serving as a court attorney and Spanish interpreter. Colon, who joined the Courts in 1992, also served as a clerk for the Hon. Kenneth P. Sherman while he was the supervising judge of the Civil Court.

Judge Colon also holds the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve.

Colon has served as a board member and chair of On Your Mark, Inc. and as past president of the Catholic Lawyers Guild.

Her other memberships have included the Latino Judges Association, Inc., the Puerto Rican Bar Association, the Columbian Lawyers Association, the Brooklyn Women’s Bar Association, and the Staten Island Women’s Bar Association.
