Judge George J. Silver - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. George J. Silver is a justice for the New York County Supreme Court (Civil Term) in the First Judicial District of New York. He was elected to the bench in 2013.

Silver began his judicial career as a judge for the Civil Court of the City of New York in Kings County, a position to which he was elected in 2005. Five years later, he was designated acting justice for the New York County Supreme Court. He served in that capacity until his election to the post. Then, in 2017, he was selected to serve as deputy chief administrative judge for the New York City Courts by the Hon. Lawrence K. Marks, Chief Administrative Judge of the State of New York.

Prior to his election to the bench, Silver worked as a partner at Silver & Santo (previously Fields & Rosen), specializing in personal injury, maritime, and commercial matters. Before that, he worked as in-house counsel for five private bus companies in Queens and Brooklyn.

Silver earned a B.S. in accounting and management from New York University. He then completed a J.D. at Hofstra University School of Law in 1983 as well as an M.B.A. in finance from New York University Stern School of Business in 1992.

His memberships have included the NAACP, the International Association of Gay and Lesbian Judges, and the Jewish Lawyers Guild. He has also participated in the Ethics and Professional Committee of the Torts and the Insurance Law Section of the New York State Bar Association as well as the Committee on Diversity and Inclusion of the New York State Bar Association.

Silver was born and raised in the Bronx, where he graduated from Christopher Columbus High School. He was the first openly gay judge to preside in the Civil Court of the City of New York in New York County.
