Judge Carlos Augusto Rodriguez - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Carlos Augusto Rodriguez is a judge for the 17th Judicial Circuit Court of Florida in Broward County. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Charlie Crist in 2009, filling the vacancy created by the passing of the Hon. Howard M. Zeidwig (deceased).

During his judicial tenure, Rodriguez has held assignments in the Criminal, Family, and Civil Divisions.

He received a B.A. in political science from Furman University in 1977. Rodriguez then completed a J.D. at the University of Florida, Fredric G. Levin College of Law, in 1980.

After graduating from law school, Rodriguez joined the Office of the Public Defender for the Seventeenth Judicial Circuit, where he began as an assistant public defender. In 1984, he was promoted to the position of chief assistant public defender. He would hold the title briefly, as the following year, Rodriguez left the Public Defender's Office to enter into private practice. He first joined the law firm of Fazio, Dawson & DiSalvo in 1985 and remained with the firm until branching out on his own in 1987. Rodriguez practiced as a sole practitioner at his own law firm until his appointment to the bench in 2009.

He became a Board-Certified Specialist in Civil Trial Law by The Florida Bar Board of Legal Specialization and Education in 1995.

He is the former chairman of the Broward Human Rights Board and The Florida Bar Grievance Committee. He has also served on the Board of Directors of The Hundred Club and The Darrell Gwynn Foundation.

In 2013, Judge Rodriguez was named Judge of the Year by the American Board of Trial Advocates.

He was born in Cuba and fled to the United States with his family at the age of five. His family settled in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and sought political asylum in 1967.
