Judge Alan C. Marin - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Alan C. Marin is a justice for the New York County Supreme Court (Civil Term) in the First Judicial District of New York. Marin was appointed to the bench by Governor Andrew Cuomo in 2016. He was then certificated to the Richmond County Supreme Court in 2017 and the New York County Supreme Court in 2019.

Marin earned a B.S. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1968. He then completed a J.D. at New York University School of Law in 1973.

After graduating from law school, Marin devoted most of his legal career to the New York State Assembly. He started as counsel and staff director for the labor committee in 1976. Three years later, he became special labor counsel for the Speaker of the New York State Assembly. He worked in that capacity until 1991, at which time he became special counsel for the Speaker of the New York State Assembly. Then, in 1992, he began working as its legislative counsel.

Marin began his judicial career as a judge for the New York State Court of Claims. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor George E. Pataki in 1997 and 2006. He was re-appointed by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo in 2015.

His memberships have included the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, the New York State Bar Association, and the Richmond County Bar Association. He has also served on the New York State Task Force on Health Insurance for Retired Educational Employees, the New York State Task Force on Optional Retirement Systems, and the New York State Deferred Compensation Board.
