The Hon. Vernita King-Johnson is a judge for the Washington County Court in Mississippi. She was elected to the bench in 1998.
King-Johnson earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Mississippi in 1977. She then completed a J.D. at the University of Mississippi School of Law in 1981.
After graduating from law school, King-Johnson entered into private practice. She worked in that capacity until 1998, supplementing her practice with service as a municipal judge in Hollandale, Arcola, and Greenville as well as a prosecutor for the Washington County Youth Court.
Her memberships have included the Council of County Court Judges, the Mississippi Trial Judges Association, the Magnolia Bar Association, and the Mississippi Council of Youth Court Judges and Referees. She has also been involved with the Moderne Arts and Civic Club and the Advisory Board of the Greenville Daycare Learning Center.
She is a recipient of the Mississippi Juvenile Justice Advocacy Award (2002, 2011).
Born and raised in Marshall County, Mississippi, King-Johnson is one of four children. She and her husband, Ivory, have three sons. They attend Pleasant Green M.B. Church of Greenville.
