The Hon. Scott J. Crichton is an associate justice for the Louisiana Supreme Court. He was elected to the bench on November 4, 2014, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Jeffrey P. Victory.
Prior to his election, Crichton was a judge for the 1st Judicial District Court of Louisiana, a position to which he was named in 1991.
Crichton earned a bachelor’s degree from Louisiana State University in 1976. He then completed a J.D. at Louisiana State University, Paul M. Hebert Law Center, in 1980.
After graduating from law school, Crichton began his legal career as an assistant district attorney with the Caddo Parish District Attorney’s Office. He also spent time as an attorney in private practice, specializing in civil litigation matters.
His memberships have included the Louisiana District Judges Association and the Shreveport Bar Association. He has also been involved with the Louisiana Judicial College and the Louisiana Center for Law and Civic Education, and he has taught Contemporary Issues in Legal Ethics and Advanced Appellate Advocacy at Tulane Law School.
Born in Shreveport, Louisiana, Crichton was raised in Minden, Louisiana. He graduated from The Webb School in Bell Buckle in Bedford County, Tennessee. His father, Thomas, was a businessman and landholder, descending from a pioneer family in Minden. Crichton and his wife, Susan, have two children. The family attends St. Mark’s Episcopal Cathedral in Shreveport.
He is registered as a Republican.
