The Hon. Richard B. Potter (Ret.) served as a judge for the 31st Judicial Circuit Court of Virginia. Potter was elected to the bench by the Virginia General Assembly in 1991. He retired in 2015.
The 31st Judicial Circuit encompasses Prince William County.
Prior to his election, Potter was a judge for the 31st Judicial District Court, a position to which he was named in 1988.
Potter earned an A.B. from the College of William & Mary in 1969. He then completed a J.D. at William & Mary Law School in 1972. He is licensed to practice in Virginia (1972), the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia (1976), and the United States Supreme Court (1976).
After graduating from law school, Potter entered into private practice, working as an attorney at Compton, Latimer, Compton & Compton. He represented clients in criminal, contract, zoning, domestic relations, personal injury, collections, and probate matters.
His memberships have included the Kiwanis Club and the Sons of the American Revolution.
Raised in Annandale, Virginia, Potter attended Annandale High School. He and his wife, Sharon, have two children.
