The Hon. Marcus L. Hunter is a judge for the Louisiana 2nd Circuit Court of Appeal. He was elected to the bench in 2021.
Prior to his election, Hunter was a judge for the 4th Judicial District Court of Louisiana, a position to which he was named in 2018. He also spent time as a member of the Louisiana House of Representatives, holding assignments on the Civil Law Committee, the Insurance Committee, and the Labor Committee (2012 to 2018).
Hunter earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Southern University in 2002. He then completed a J.D. at Southern University Law Center in 2005.
After graduating from law school, Hunter entered into private practice alongside his brother and his father, working as an associate at Willie Hunter, Jr. & Associates. He remained with the firm until his election to the bench, supplementing his practice with service as a staff attorney to Northeast Louisiana Legal Services (2008).
His memberships have included the American Bar Association, the American Judges Association, the Louisiana State Bar Association, the Shreveport Bar Association, the New Orleans Bar Association, and the Baton Rouge Bar Association. He has also been involved with the Louis A. Martinet Legal Society, the Louisiana Supreme Court Historical Society, the American Constitution Society, and the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.
Raised in Monroe, Louisiana, Hunter attended Julia C. Wossman High School.
He is registered as a Democrat.
