The Hon. Lyn M. Simmons is a judge for the 4th Judicial District Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court of Virginia. She was appointed to the bench by former Governor Terry McAuliffe in 2015.
The 4th Judicial District encompasses the City of Norfolk.
Prior to her appointment, Simmons was a senior assistant commonwealth’s attorney for the City of Norfolk, a position to which she was named in 2004. Before that, she spent time as a sole practitioner in her own private practice (1993 to 2004).
Simmons earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Hampton University in 1979. She then completed a J.D. at North Carolina Central University School of Law in 1982.
Three years after graduating from law school, Simmons began her legal career as an assistant commonwealth’s attorney for the City of Norfolk. She served in that capacity until 1992.
Her memberships have included the boards of the Virginia Stage Company, the CANDII House, the Norfolk Senior Center, and the Boys & Girls Club of Southeast Virginia.
She and her husband, the Hon. Jerrauld C. Jones of the Norfolk Circuit Court, have one son, Jay Jones, who has represented the 89th District in the Virginia House of Delegates.
