The Hon. John R. Doyle (Ret.) served as a judge for the 4th Judicial Circuit Court of Virginia. Doyle was appointed to the bench by former Governor Tim Kaine in 2008. He retired in 2023.
The 4th Judicial Circuit encompasses the City of Norfolk.
Prior to his appointment, Doyle was the Commonwealth’s Attorney for the City of Norfolk, a position to which he was named in 2000. Before that, he spent time as an attorney in private practice (1992 to 2000).
Doyle earned a bachelor’s degree from Williams College in 1979. He then completed a J.D. at William & Mary Law School in 1982.
After graduating from law school, Doyle began his legal career with the Norfolk Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office. During his tenure there, he held assignments as a senior assistant commonwealth’s attorney, a deputy commonwealth’s attorney, and a chief deputy commonwealth’s attorney.
His memberships have included the Virginia Association of Commonwealth’s Attorneys. He also sat on the City of Norfolk Electoral Board.
