Judge Jennifer G. Schecter - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Jennifer G. Schecter is an acting justice for the New York County Supreme Court (Civil Term) in the First Judicial District of New York.

Schecter earned a B.A. from Rutgers College in 1993. She then completed a J.D. at Seton Hall University School of Law in 1996.

After graduating from law school, Schecter began working as an associate at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom. Then, in 1998, she became a principal law clerk to Chief Judge Judith S. Kaye of the New York State Court of Appeals. She served in that capacity until 2001, when she became a principal law clerk for the Hon. Eileen Bransten of the New York County Supreme Court.

She began her judicial career as a judge for the Civil Court of the City of New York in New York County after her election to the bench in 2009. Two years later, she was assigned to the Criminal Court of the City of New York. She presided there for two years before returning to the Civil Court of the City of New York. Then, in 2015, she was appointed to the New York County Supreme Court by Chief Administrative Judge A. Gail Prudenti.

Schecter served as president of the Judges and Lawyers Breast Cancer Alert.

She is registered as a Democrat.
