Hon. Jay D. Mondry (Ret.) was a judge for the 9th Judicial District Court of Minnesota in Hubbard County. He joined the bench in 1990. Mondry retired in 2006.
The 9th Judicial District includes Aitkin, Beltrami, Cass, Clearwater, Crow Wing, Hubbard, Itasca, Kittson, Koochiching, Lake of the Woods, Mahnomen, Marshall, Norman, Pennington, Polk, Red Lake, and Roseau Counties.
Prior to beginning his judicial career, he had worked as a private practice attorney (1967 to 1971 and 1979 to 1990) and also served as the county attorney for Hubbard County (1971 to 1979).
Mondry received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame. He went on to complete an LL.B. from the University of North Dakota School of Law in 1964. Mondry was admitted to practice in North Dakota (1964) and Minnesota (1964).
He received an appointment to serve on the Governor’s Crime Commission and was also a member of the National District Attorneys Association Golden Standards Committee and the Park Rapids Schools’ Dropout Prevention Committee.
In addition, Mondry was a past president of the Wadena Lions Club and a past chairman of the Hubbard County Parks and Recreation Board. He was also a founding member and chairman of the local Ducks Unlimited.
He and his wife, Judy, have four children. Following his retirement, Mondry looked forward to deer hunting, fishing in Alaska, and spending the winter at his vacation home on the Gulf Coast in Florida. He also enjoys attending the University of North Dakota hockey games and the University of Notre Dame football games.
