The Hon. David F. Hermerding is a judge for the 9th Judicial District Court of Minnesota. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Mark Dayton on February 24, 2017, filling a vacancy created by the resignation of the Hon. John R. Solien.
The 9th Judicial District includes Aitkin County, Beltrami County, Cass County, Clearwater County, Crow Wing County, Hubbard County, Itasca County, Kittson County, Koochiching County, Lake of the Woods County, Mahnomen County, Marshall County, Norman County, Pennington County, Polk County, Red Lake County, and Roseau County.
Prior to his appointment, Hermerding was a chief deputy county attorney for the Crow Wing County Attorney’s Office, a position to which he was named in 2007. During his tenure there, he prosecuted felony and gross misdemeanor drug cases. Before that, he spent time as a managing attorney with the Minnesota Public Defender’s Office in the 9th Judicial District (1998 to 2007).
Hermerding earned a bachelor’s degree from St. John’s University in 1984. He then completed a J.D. at William Mitchell College of Law in 1993.
After graduating from law school, Hermerding began his legal career as an associate in the Erickson Law Offices. He worked in that capacity until 1994, at which time he moved to Ryan, Ruttger & Drake. Hermerding spent the next two years with the firm, eventually leaving to become a partner at Mitchell & Hermerding.
His memberships have included the American Bar Association, the Minnesota State Bar Association, the National Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys, the Minnesota County Attorneys Association, the Aitkin-Crow Wing County Bar Association (president), and the John E. Simonett American Inn of Court (president.
He has also been involved with the Violent Crimes Coordinating Council, and he sat on the Board of Directors of PORT Boys and Girls Home, the Crow Wing Lake Association, and the Brainerd BN Credit Union.
Hermerding has six children.
