The Hon. Brian C. Denton is an associate judge for the Prince George’s County District Court in Maryland. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Martin O’Malley on September 23, 2014.
Prior to his appointment, Denton was an assistant public defender for the Anne Arundel County Office of the Public Defender, a position to which he was named in 2014. Before that, he spent time as a district public defender in District IV (2000 to 2003), District VII (2003 to 2005), and District V (2005 to 2014).
Denton earned a bachelor’s degree in finance from the University of Maryland, College Park in 1978. He then completed a J.D. at the University of Maryland, Francis King Carey School of Law in 1982. He is admitted to practice in Maryland (1982) and the United States District Court for the District of Maryland (1989).
After graduating from law school, Denton joined the Prince George’s County Office of the Public Defender. During his tenure there, he rose through the ranks, serving as Chief of the Juvenile Division (1991), Chief of the District Court Division (1992), and Chief of the Circuit Court Division (1998).
His memberships have included the Maryland State Bar Association and the Prince George’s County Bar Association.
He was named Outstanding Assistant Public Defender for District V (1997). He is also a recipient of the William W. Cahill, Jr., Award (2005) and the Death Penalty Defense Award (2008) from the Office of the Public Defender.
