Judge Arthur F. Engoron - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Arthur F. Engoron is a justice of the New York County Supreme Court, Civil Term, in the First Judicial District of New York. He was elected to the bench on November 3, 2015.

In 2023, Engoron received national attention for presiding over a lawsuit filed by New York Attorney General Letitia James against former President Donald J. Trump. On September 26, 2023, Engoron ruled that Trump committed fraud by artificially inflating the value of several real estate assets, all with the express purpose of obtaining better rates on insurance policies and loan agreements. The ruling resulted in the cancellation of the former president's business licenses in the State of New York. On February 16, 2024, Engoron handed down his final decision, ordering Trump to pay a $355 million penalty in answer to the civil fraud case brought by Attorney General James.

Prior to his election, Engoron was a judge for the New York County Civil Court, a position to which he was named in 2003. During his tenure there, he was selected by the Hon. A. Gail Prudenti, former Chief Administrative Judge of the State of New York, to sit as an acting justice of the New York County Supreme Court (2013 to 2015). Before that, he spent time as a principal law clerk to the Hon. Marin Schoenfeld of the New York County Supreme Court (1991 to 2002).

Engoron earned a bachelor's degree in English literature from Columbia University. He financed his studies by driving a taxi, eventually completing a J.D. at New York University School of Law in 1979.

After graduating from law school, Engoron entered into private practice, working as an associate at Olwine, Connelly, Chase, O’Donnell & Weyher. He remained with the firm for two years, eventually leaving to join Pryor, Cashman, Sherman, and Flynn.

His memberships have included the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, the New York County Lawyers Association, the Brehon Law Society, the Jewish Lawyers Guild, and the New York Women’s Bar Association. He has also been involved with the American Civil Liberties Union.

Raised in Queens, New York, Engoron later moved to East Williston on Long Island, New York, where he attended the Wheatley School. He has built a reputation for sprinkling biographical information throughout his judicial rulings, disclosing, for example, his participation in protests against the Vietnam War. He is also a father of four children, having been married three times, and he has taught piano and drums, playing keyboard in a local bar band.

He is a registered Democrat.
